The data gathered from this type of testing is important for the design of many different products including film, adhesive, and many more that will end up having to be subjected to different shear loads. A shear testing is used on plastics, composite and polymers in order to compare the different material as well as performing quality control tests. It’s also important if there are loads that the material being tested may be subjected to. In fact, it’s one of the most important tests that are done on this material if they will be a part of transportation, defense, or aerospace. 

Different materials will test differently during this type of analysis and this is kept in mind when analyzing the results that were produced. Sometimes the results that are obtained from this type of testing is unpredictable especially when dealing with unfamiliar material. There can even be differences in the results depending on factors such as the temperature while the test is being performed. Because of the differences that can occur based on the material and situation, there are a lot of different variations in tests that test the shear strength being examined. 

What Is Its Purpose? 


If you need to know the shear strength of something, this type of testing is how it needs to be done. It can show just how much the material can take before it fails which is important for a lot of items including screws and bolts. If there is a force trying to separate the planes that are attached using these fasteners, they need to make sure they use materials that are designed to withstand the force being exerted. If just one fastener fails, it can cause problems throughout the entire structure that it is part of. 

What Types Of Tests Are There? 


There are 2 types of testing that are used commonly to test for shear strength. While there may only be 2, there are a lot of modifications that are sometimes used. These tests are generally performed with 4 point bend fixtures or 3 point flexures depending on the needs of the material being tested. These types of tests generally put the material through 2 different points of force at least and the point of the test is to see how much force is needed to remove the middle portion of the material. In the other example, only material with tapered ends can be tested as they are both placed in grips and pulled apart in opposite directions. 

What Types Of Materials Are Tested? 


Three are 3 different types of material that are commonly used in this type of testing. These include layered composites, adhesives, and rigid substrates. Some of the things that make up rigid substances include plastics, ceramics, metals, composites, or wood. These rigid materials are in general fasteners or different types of solid building materials that are being tested. Composite materials are tested to make sure that the layers stay together while adhesives are tested to see how much force it takes to detach objects being adhered together.
